Simple Truths

Posted on Aug 24th, 2006 by Metta : metaphorical longshoreman Metta

Are not our joys as simple?
Steamy soup on a frigid evening,
the open smile of our child or beloved
at our own warm breast.

Are not our griefs as valid?
Who can replace a lost child
or bring back the dead husband?

Each of these we have kissed -
tenderly and passionately.
One with a tongue of fire and longing,
the other with a merciful heart praising God.

When we decide we are different or more grand
based upon which alter we bow to
or which tax man we pay -

we are lost.

When we forget the simple truths
our entire life becomes the lie
we tell ourselves.

Metta,
beautiful way of telling how cleverly we deceive ourselves . Joys are simple for everyone and grief , suffering quite valid for each one ..but still we believe that we are different and inflict injury to others. Nice poem .
